NFL Cheerleaders do not make a lot of money.
According to a group of current and former cheerleaders for the Oakland Raiders, they don't even make minimum wage. According to the San Jose Mercury News, a group of cheerleaders sued the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday.
The cheerleaders claim that the team holds all of their pay until the end of the year, doesn't cover for all of the hours they work, and won't pay for business expenses.
Attorney Sharon Vinick says the cheerleaders are contracted at $1,250 a year and that works out to be less than $5 an hour, which is more than two dollars less than the national minimum wage (and 3 dollars less than California's minimum wage).
Lead plantiff Lacy (last name withheld) says, "The club controls our hairstyle and makeup, and we have to foot the bill. We also have to pay the costs for traveling to all kinds of events, including photo shoots... I love the Raiders and I love being a Raiderette, but someone has to stand up for all of the women of the NFL who work so hard for the fans and the teams."
