How Should Mike Tomlin Be Punished?

How Should Mike Tomlin Be Punished?

Jacoby Jones, the Baltimore Ravens' kick returner, is streaking down the sideline.  It should not be a surprising site.  Jones recorded the longest play in Super Bowl history back in February.  He returned the opening kickoff of the second half 108 yards for a touchdown.

Now, let's say you're an opposing coach.  Apparently, you stand right on the edge of the field during kickoffs and face away from the play so you can watch it on the stadium's JumboTron.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made that claim.

On Thanksgiving night, Tomlin was standing on the edge of the field as Jones streaked down the sideline.  So, there was a 50 percent chance that Jones was heading right for Tomlin.

Tomlin told reporters, "I lost my placement as he broke free and saw at the last second how close I was to the field of play."

Mike Tomlin is either lying or he is an idiot.

It makes sense for Tomlin to lie.  He clearly helped his kickoff team prevent a touchdown.  Admitting that would probably result in even more hot water.

But, he might also be an idiot. How can a head coach in the NFL have no idea that he's standing on the field?  What's Tomlin's proof that he's not an idiot?  He didn't wave to himself when he came into view on the JumboTron?

Is it really believable that he did not have a clue that Jones was coming right where he was standing until just before the returner got to him?

If he can get you to buy that, he should start selling ocean-front houses in Pittsburgh.

A video from Pittsburgh's KDKA suggests that Tomlin knew exactly what he was doing.  That, of course, would make him a liar.

It is unclear what punishment he will face.  NFL insider Jason La Canfora says Tomlin and the Steelers could face a fine and may even lose a draft pick.

We'll see.

For his part, Jacoby Jones' explanation of what happened is hilarious.
