Sammy Hagar gets charitable on summer tour

Sammy Hagar says he knows what it's like to go without, and to rely on the generosity of others.

The Red Rocker tells Billboard.com he and his three siblings were raised by a single mother, who "was always half on welfare or food stamps and would get in line during Thanksgiving or Christmas when people were giving away free turkeys."  He adds that it "made a big difference" in their lives.  And now he's making that type of difference for others in need.

Hagar is working with food banks in each city he visits on his Four Decades Of Rock tour, highlighting the charities in his show and making donations to each facility.  Sammy explains that he chose to support local food banks because they're "the simplest and most reliable way to help others."

Hagar's trek is a celebration of his 40-year career.  The singer is also promoting his upcoming album, Sammy Hagar & Friends, which will hit stores on September 24th.  The collaborations disc features Sammy's current single, "Knockdown Dragout," featuring Kid Rock.
