Senators delay unveiling immigration bill

(Yahoo!) -- The Senate’s bipartisan “Gang of Eight” had planned a press conference Tuesday to unveil a sweeping immigration reform bill, but the event has been postponed until later in the week in the wake of the deadly Boston bombings.

The bill would put the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country on a 13-year path to U.S. citizenship that would cost each $2,000 in fines plus additional fees, and would begin only after steps have been taken to secure the border, the Associated Press reports.

The Senate is scheduled to continue debate Tuesday on gun control legislation, with the focus on expanding background checks. A vote on the background checks amendment had been expected midweek but Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Monday it is likely to be delayed.
