Lou Reed, the leader of the Velvet Underground and influence to generations of rock musicians, died of liver disease.
The New York Times reported the cause of death after talking to Reed's doctor. Dr. Charles Miller of the Cleveland Clinic said liver disease was the cause of death. The Cleveland Clinic is where Reed had a liver transplant earlier in 2013 and where he was recently treated.
Since Reed's death, memorials have poured in. Bands from The Who to Iggy Pop have expressed condolences.
