(Hanover, NH)  --  Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop is dead.  The Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine made the announcement today.  Koop passed away at his home in New Hampshire at the age of 96.  He was credited to leading the charge to make the U.S. a smoke-free nation.

Koop served in the post through most of the 80s.  He penned "The Health Consequences of Smoking-Nicotine Addiction" which is credited for changing public opinion on tobacco.  It also raised the issue of second-hand smoke.  He also founded the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth.
